If you only want disappearing messages and a place to chat with family and friends, use WhatsApp (please). Void is a separate utility for group chats with an end date — so zero contact syncing, and the whole chat disappears.
The whole thing: messages, chat container, participants, and the space it takes up on your screen. After it expires, you can revisit the read-only chat and screenshot anything you want before it's gone.

A link or a QR code. Anyone with it walks in. Anyone without it doesn’t.
You can extend the timer before it runs out. Once it expires, the chat becomes read-only. Due to popular demand, an archive option is coming soon.

I got sick of all the dead group chats and a contact list full of people I couldn't recognize. I also hated not knowing when it was socially acceptable to leave one. The idea that haunted my shower thoughts ended up becoming a hackathon finalist, so I figured maybe I wasn't the only one annoyed by this.
